Book 1 – At The Very Centre
Book 1 in the series is a small collection of colour compositions. This first book in the collection was more of an attempt to test the water of what could be feasible, working out the logistics of simple book making. At this stage I had begun to think about the longer term commitment of the project, realising that in order to progress through all 52 books that time was an obvious constraint.
My initial thought on the project was to have no real preconception week by week, to try and be more direct, and to work with what was at hand in the studio. Even at this early stage I realised that this way of working wasn’t feasible, leading me to plan out (at least in the short term) a brief idea for subsequent books. The first notes made on the project as a whole were thoughts around the format and that although these were ‘books’ this was to be taken in the loosest sense. The idea of ‘Book Arts’ or ‘Artists Multiples’ comes to mind but I was aware that each book would be a one-off and more of a book-object which in itself was less concerned about being read as being explorative.
This exploration is not only of format but of topic and medium. I have plans for books that are meant to be engaging because they are an observation of printed matter in our daily lives but also because they may in some way question daily life and society.
I hope to update more about the process of this project as I move forward through the year.
